Prince Albert Fire Department rescues senior from structure fire

The Prince Albert Fire Department responded to a pair of incidents last week, including one that required ladder rescue and an incident at the Paper Excellence Pulp Mill.

On July 3, the fire department attended a structure fire at 3 a.m. at the 400 block of Ninth Street East at a multi-suite unit. Battalion chief Jay Zablocki told paNOW they rescued a senior from an upper floor using a ladder who could not get themselves out.

“There was smoke damage throughout the structure and smoke throughout the structure so the battalion chief for command on duty that night determined that to do a ladder removal was the best option for that particular person,” Zablocki said.

He added there were people who self-evacuated but there were some suites that were vacant.

Director of public affairs with Parkland Ambulance Lyle Karasiuk said the person rescued was a 69-year-old female who was transported from the incident with non-life threatening injuries and has been since discharged from hospital.

The blaze was extinguished and there was damage to one suite and the hallway. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

A day before that on July 2, the department was called to the Paper Excellence Pulp Mill at 3:07 p.m. after a waste bark pile that was burned during the Cloverdale Fire had reignited. They were originally called for a report of a grass fire. Heavy equipment was brought in and the fire was extinguished.

Zablocki said immediately after the Cloverdale Wildfire there were hotspots and flare ups that were monitored for a couple weeks using equipment such as a drone. However, he said in recent weeks there haven’t been as many to monitor, but added there is a chance of sparks such as this incident.

“The bark pile at the mill has been a bit of an ongoing issue and they have dealt with it themselves as far as bringing equipment in to dig it up, turn it over, work it and water it as much as they can do to control that,” he said.

There were no injuries or structure damage as a result of the incident.
