Committee established to discuss new pool for Shellbrook

Discussions surrounding a new pool in Shellbrook, have come to the surface.

A committee has been formed and had its first meeting earlier this month. Co-chair Kathleen Nording, who is also a town councillor, told paNOW the current pool is past its prime.

“It’s been a wonderful thing for the town, but now there are things going structurally wrong. And we have a competitive swim team, and they could sure use a little bit extra length to hold tournaments,” she said.

The town’s current pool is nearly 50 years old and because it’s outdoors, only operates during the summer months. The size and scope of a possible replacement have not yet been discussed, but Nording noted the committee was very impressed by the recent fundraising effort to upgrade the town’s rink.

“We decided, well you know, they did so well, let’s keep it going and we’ve got some infrastructure here that really needs a boost,” Nording said.

The committee is still in search of members and Nording said anyone interested can contact the town office and speak to either the administrator or recreation director.

Mark Klaassen, head coach of the Shellbrook Silverfins swim club, is also on the steering committee and said he would like to have a place where the team can train year-round, and also host competitions.

“An indoor pool would be nice but that’s a few million dollars more than I know we have the budget for. We’ll take anything at this time,” he said.

Much like Nording, Klaassen said he too would like to see the project become a community effort.

“It’s similar to a hockey rink in a small town. It’s a place where people come to meet and gather during the summer times so the more people involved, the better,” he said.
