MELFORT, Sask. — Maple Leaf Foods has signed a deal to buy four pig farms in Saskatchewan from a group of companies known as Polar Pork.

The agreement includes two sow barns and two nursery barns with the potential to supply 140,000 pigs and will substantially increase the number of pigs it can produce in Saskatchewan.

The deal is part of a plan to grow production at its pork processing plant in Brandon, Man.

The company said it expects to invest up to $27 million in the barns over time, including acquisition costs and capital investments.

The deal will close June 2022, subject to conditions.

The National Farmers Union (NFU) has a list of concerns for the federal-provincial-territorial agriculture ministers meeting this weekend.

NFU sent a letter to the ministers as they prepare to replace the five-year Canadian Agricultural Partnership.

The NFU said priorities for the gathering should include promotion of farmer-led innovation and knowledge-sharing, upholding supply management, helping farmers mitigate and adapt to climate change risks and funding new agri-environmental programs.

The agriculture ministers meet in Victoria, B.C. from July 2 to 6.

A quieter week in the cattle markets with no feeder steer prices reported.

Feeder heifer prices were higher across all weight categories compared to the previous week.

Prices ranged from $202.17 per hundredweight for the 500-to-600-pound weight class to $167.42 per hundredweight for those in the 800 pound and over category.

Canfax reported roughly 4,200 head of cattle were sold in Saskatchewan last week.
