Candlelight vigil set for P.A. this evening

The latest act of remembrance on behalf of those who died in Canada’s Indian Residential School system will come much closer to home this evening.

The Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC) will host a candlelight vigil outside City Hall at 7 p.m.

The PAGC said it will host the event to honour Indigenous children and the survivors of the Indian Residential Schools in unity with Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation [in Kamloops, B.C.] and Cowessess First Nation.

The vigil is open to the public and all participants are asked to wear orange.

There will be some speakers and a moment of silence.

While the vigil is open to all, the organizers said COVID regulations will be observed.

A vigil was held at Cowessess First Nation Saturday evening.

Solar lights twinkled next to 751 unmarked graves near the site of a former residential school there.

Mann Northway GM in Prince Albert donated the lights in part to show support for employee Kevin Friesen who is also a member of the Cowessess First Nation.

Friesen drove to his home reserve with the lights for the vigil and a moment of silence at 7:51 p.m. A teepee was erected at the site and a fire is set to burn until Wednesday.
