MELFORT, Sask. – A first-of-its-kind drought monitor has been developed by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC).

The new tool predicts drought conditions 30-days into the future.

The Drought Outlook tool was developed by AAFC Agroclimate Specialists, Trevor Hadwen, Marilee Pregitzer, Dr. Catherine Champagne, Calvin Poff, and Richard Warren.

The tool will be made available through the national Drought Early Warning System for the purpose of informing producers and policy developers.

The Canadian Grain Commission has a new chief grain inspector.

Derek Bunkowsky was appointed to the position on Jun.24.

Bunkowsky has significant technical expertise in grain grading in Canada, including over 25 years of experience in the public and private sectors.

Bunkowsky will be taking over the role from Gino Castonguay, who has been the chief inspector since 2017.

The Russian Federation said undeclared or unregistered GMOs were found in recent shipments from Canada.

As a result, it has suspended imports of animal and pet feed from Canada.

Russia said all products shipped before Jun. 17 would be tested before being allowed in the country.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency statement said Agriculture Canada and Global Affairs Canada are all investigating.

CFIA reminded exporters they must meet all importing requirements including limits on GMO content established by Russia for pet food and animal feed.
