Carlton celebrates in-person graduation

Jun 25, 2021 | 1:00 PM

Even with the pandemic going on, Carlton Comprehensive High School graduates still get to walk across the stage, receive their diplomas, and most importantly, celebrate with their friends and family.

Last year due to COVID, the graduation celebration was forced to be online only. This year, over 250 graduates got their moment to shine during this year’s drive-by event.

The front steps of the school were set up like a stage, complete with a red carpet that the student walks down to receive their diploma from principal Jeff Court before getting back in their vehicle and driving away.

“It’s been a fantastic day. We’re really excited to be able to put this event on for our graduates and celebrate the successes they have this year,” Court told paNOW. “They’ve been such a resilient group, through everything they have gone through this year.”

“It’s so great to be able to have their families here, and doing it in a safe way.”

The students are checked in at the Art Hauser Centre parking lot where there are a couple photo opportunities for grads before they walk the stage.

“We have the red carpet event, where they walk up and a staff member reads their name as a graduate and shares a short story, and their future plans,” Court explained. “We lucked out with a gorgeous day, and were very excited to do this.”

Carlton graduate Kiesha Cook was very appreciative for the in-person event.

“It’s a really great opportunity. I’m so glad that I was able to have this and that this was able to happen,” Cook said. “Even being a graduate from Carlton is just awesome. Very proud of it.”

Kaden Charles, another graduate was very thankful that his family got to see him graduate.

“I didn’t expect lots to happen because of COVID. It’s really special to spend it with your family,” Charles said.

Next year, he plans on attending Saskatchewan Polytechnic and will be taking the culinary program.
