Storm leaves Herb Bassett Home running on generator

Jun 17, 2021 | 2:00 PM

The Herb Basset Home in Prince Albert, which is connected to the Victoria Hospital, remains on standby electric generation until repairs can be completed following the storm Wednesday morning.

Stephen Olde, the Director of Building Services for the North with the Saskatchewan Health Authority, said when the power went down briefly during the storm, emergency generators kicked in at the hospital and for the home. At no time was patient safety compromised.

But the deluge of water had got into the electrics at Herb Bassett preventing normal power being restored later in the morning. That meant non-essential elements like air conditioning were impacted.

“With the water shorting out some of the equipment we had no way of switching back to Saskpower for our distribution,” Olde said. “We called in Team Power and Asiil Electrical from Prince Albert to assist us.”

He said everything was back to normal at the hospital by 6 p.m. and at Herb Bassett by around 9 p.m.

Currently, the home is on a rented generator to supply all the power and if that were to stop, the hospital would supply power, Olde explained.

One of the quick decisions made was ordering the parts required for the repair.

“There was some overload protection devices that water entered and that had failed,” he said. “There’s no timeline for when the parts will be delivered to complete the repairs to the Herb Bassett Home.”

Olde said he was very happy with Asiil Electrical for helping out.

“I can’t speak any higher of the company to support the health care facility,” he said.
