Families who traveled out of the province to access CT Scanner to have local option

The Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan is now one step closer to improved technology at the cancer center in Saskatoon.

After a successful 2021 Charity Steer Show and Sale, the Wild Rose 4-H Beef Club is donating a significant amount of money to the Cancer Foundation, keeping the money in the province.

Each year, the clubs in the Prince Albert Regional Show and Sale take turns raising and auctioning off a steer with all proceeds going towards a charity of that club’s choice.

The 4-H club has two families who are currently winning their battles with cancer. Making the choice for them fairly simple.

Olivia Woytiuk, Club President, told paNOW her family is one of the two that are affected.

“We discussed a few charity options. My dad is one parent that has cancer,” Woytiuk said. “I was kind of looking at cancer charities. We wanted to give back to something that is in Saskatchewan.”

The event took place from June 13-14. The club raised a total of $49,930. The money will be matched by Malcolm Jenkins, the owner of Prince Albert’s Canadian Tire.

They will be presenting the foundation a total of $98,780.

The money they raised will go towards a new 4D CT Scan Simulator at the cancer center in Saskatoon.

Woytiuk said this technology would be a first in Saskatoon and many families will no longer have to travel out of province to access the CT Scanner.

“I think the closest simulator is in Edmonton. To have it local will be so much better,” Woytiuk said. “Cancer is pretty hard to deal with. If you have to go to Edmonton to just get a scan that would pretty tough on a lot of families.

“Advancement in technology, like this simulator, is why the survival rate is so much higher.”
