Agriculture Roundup for Thursday June 17, 2021

Jun 17, 2021 | 11:55 AM

MELFORT, Sask. – Topsoil moisture conditions have improved across much of Saskatchewan.

In the latest Ministry of Agriculture crop report, topsoil moisture is rated as two per cent surplus, 72 per cent adequate, 23 per cent short, and three per cent very short.

Hay and pastureland topsoil moisture has improved to 61 per cent adequate.

Producers have been spraying for weed and insect control as wind conditions allow.

Heavy localized rainfall resulted in flooding and water pooling in low areas. With the rain came extremely strong winds in some regions as well, resulting in damaged bins, buildings, and crops.

Results Driven Agriculture Research (RDAR) is providing funding for environmental stewardship research.

The purpose is to gather scientific data to evaluate the effectiveness of wetland management practices in mitigating the movement of crop protection products into wetlands and aquatic ecosystems.

From this research, best management practices will be developed to protect water habitats from crop protection product use while providing information to producers.

RDAR Board Chair David Chalack said the collection of on-farm data will increase the quality and relevance of information that can be used to inform policy and regulatory guidelines for crop protection product use.

The project was developed in collaboration with the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA), which uses science-based data to support their evaluation and re-evaluation decisions.

Applications are being accepted for the Canadian Western Agribition (CWA) Scholarship program.

Its intent is to provide $2,500 for young people pursuing a post-secondary and graduate education.

The applicant must be in their second or subsequent year in a program of at least two years duration.

Applicants must be passionate about agriculture and have participated in CWA events including livestock classes, 4-H classes, and exhibits.

The application deadline is Oct. 1.
