Chancellors Scholarship at U of S goes to multiple students at Ecole St. Mary High School

Many high school seniors have applied for scholarships at the Universities they will attend.

For a couple students at Ecole St. Mary High School, they are getting one of the top scholarships awarded.

The University of Saskatchewan offers the Chancellors Scholarship to 12 students a year. The value of this scholarship is $30,000, which is $7,500 per year over four years. The student must be graduating or graduated from a Canadian high School. The scholarship is renewable for an additional three years provided an 80 per cent average is maintained.

Out of the 12 scholarships the University of Saskatchewan offers, five will be going to students at Ecole St. Mary High School in Prince Albert.

The five students are Maria Janser, Ethan Minier, Grayson Tourney, Spencer Dmytruk, and Seth LeMoal.

Principal at Ecole St. Mary, Mark Phaneuf is very proud of what all their students achieved in a COVID obstructed year.

“All of our students have done exceptionally well at their time at St. Mary’s. During COVID things may have been quite difficult in a lot of ways but students found a way to stay focused and really work hard at what was important to them, Phaneuf said.

“These five students it really paid off in regards to scholarships for them.”

One of the students, Spencer Dmytruk was very thankful for all the support he has received this year.

“It’s a really big honour to receive this scholarship and I wouldn’t be able to do it without the support from my school and community,” Dmytruk told paNOW. “I feel like [this year] was definitely manageable and I am looking forward for the future.”

While surprised, Maria Janser was also very happy about receiving the scholarship.

“I was very grateful when I heard the news, I kind of didn’t believe it,” Janser explained to paNOW. “I found out that other people from my school got it as well so that was a very cool feeling to see who else did as well.”

Grad plans at Ecole St. Mary High School

This year Ecole St. Mary has 235 total graduates.

From June 14-16 students will get to dress up in their cap and gown and will be scheduled to receive their diploma in-person on video.

Plenty of the feedback the school has gotten about their plans have been positive and understanding.

“I’ve heard from a lot of people that are appreciative. Up to six guests can come with each graduate to see them receive their diploma when we are doing the filming,” Phaneuf said. “I did receive quite a bit of feedback from people that they are very appreciative to be able to come in-person to see their child with some family members to receive their diploma.”

The virtual graduation will be on June 23 at 10 a.m. and can be seen as a YouTube Premier Event.
