Ducks are back at the Memorial Gardens

A summer tradition for 20 plus years in Prince Albert is taking place again this year, and began on Thursday at the Prince Albert Memorial Gardens.

The birds are chirping, flowers are blooming, and after missing last year the Prince Albert Memorial Gardens are once again home to 16 ducks on their property.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions the annual ‘duck launch’ looked different this year with no one gathered for the event.

The staff encourages residents to come out to the gardens to feed the ducks, walk around, and enjoy themselves in the park.

Not only are the ducks visually pleasing, but they are also there to teach residents as well, Austin Atchison the branch manager said.

“Our annual duck launch has always been about care, fun, and also about letting go,” Atchison said. “This year the ducks will teach us something else. Sticking together, hope, and joy.

“We invite everyone in our community to take a step back, relax, and reflect. We hope by bringing our ducks back that we create a safe place for people to do this.”

The ducks come from a local farm and will be going back to the farm again at the end of the summer season, once it is too cold for the ducks to be at the park.

This summer there will be a photo contest at the memorial gardens. Residents are encouraged to take pictures of the ducks and email their pictures to AAtchison@arbormemorial.com.

“Come out, take pictures of the ducks, or something beautiful you see on the property,” Atchison said.

The winner of the photo contest will be chosen in August, with the prize to be determined.
