Helping the less fortunate

PAGC and Regina kitchen team up to help the vulnerable

Jun 3, 2021 | 2:04 PM

Indigenous and Sikh free kitchens will team up on Saturday to help feed the less fortunate in Prince Albert.

The Guru Nanak Free Kitchen from Regina will come up and partner with the Prince Albert Grand Council and their Urban Services Community Cares Kitchen to deliver fresh and dry goods, personal protective equipment (PPE), and other items to help support vulnerable communities during the pandemic. The kitchens will be in the parking lot of the Prince Albert Multicultural Council and the PAGC Urban Services on Central Avenue from noon until 2:30 p.m.

Community Cares Kitchen director Natalie Guimond said making the partnership with Guru Nanak would help both communities. She said the PAGC would return to Regina at some point to provide a similar service.

“It’s about building partnerships, but more importantly, it’s about building relations so that later on, we have that connection that we are taking care of our vulnerable people—regardless of who they are,” Guimond said.

Although both kitchens have been working throughout the pandemic, having a larger scale event like this was needed—especially now that restrictions have started to lessen more people get vaccinated.

“As we’re slowly starting to come together, the separation that we’ve all been needing to keep, we’ve had to keep our concentration of our kindness in our bubbles. But as we are becoming vaccinated and we are able to put out more of our work out in our communities more and more as our protocols are reducing, this is connecting our province and saying we weren’t isolated, we were just doing our due course to keep our communities protected.”

Guimond said COVID-19 protocols will be followed. Those waiting in line should either stay in their vehicles or line up on foot with plenty of space.

Both the Guru Nanak Free Kitchen and the Community Cares Kitchen received funding from the Conexus Credit Union and their Kindness Capital Fund. Guru Nanak also receives sponsors from the community each week with Munish and Ritu Kamboj, while the Community Cares Kitchen donations come through the PAGC’s pandemic relief.
