Vaccine availability

Vaccination program in public schools starting next week

May 28, 2021 | 12:43 PM

The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) will be offering a student vaccination program in public schools across Saskatchewan beginning on May 31st and will go for the first three weeks of June.

Information about the program has been sent to parents from the schools, including a letter from the school board, a letter from the SHA, consent forms, where students can be vaccinated and a schedule for vaccination times.

Robert Bratvold, Director of Education for the Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division, says this program is an SHA program and schools will just be acting as a viable location.

“The Saskatchewan Health Authority has enabled the youth from 12-17 to be vaccinated and felt that schools would be a great place to offer that program,” Bratvold said. “It’s a health authority process, hosted in schools.

“We are supportive of health efforts so we are making our schools available so students can access the vaccine if they wish.”

The vaccination program is voluntary and will be available in all public schools in the division where there are students aged 12-17, meaning high schools and middle or elementary schools with Grades 7-8. If students are aged 12 but are not in grade 7 yet, SHA will make arrangements to make sure they have access as well.

“I think it is important for everybody to know that the vaccine is available and consider its value in terms of their health and protecting the health of people around them,” Bratvold said.

The school division would just like to remind the public, it is important that students, families, and community members continue to:

• follow all public health orders and recommendations

• be diligent in performing the daily health screening and self-monitoring,

• stay home if ill,

• call the Health Line at 811 if exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms,

• practice proper hand hygiene,

• maintain physical distancing as much as possible,

• wear a mask when appropriate, and,

• do whatever we can to keep each other safe.
