MELFORT, Sask. — World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) has recognized Canada as negligible risk for Bovine Spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).

Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) president Bob Lowe said the BSE era for Canada has now ended. He said it brought unprecedented hardship to the industry in the early 2000’s.

To achieve negligible risk a country must demonstrate the last case of BSE was born more than 11 years ago. Canada’s last case was reported in 2009.

Syngenta Canada will split its seed and crop protection businesses starting June 1.

The seed side will fall under the NK Seeds brand.

Syngenta Canada president Trevor Heck said this means staff will be specialists in either seed or crop protection.

The crop protection business will be led by Heck, who will also continue as president and lead the Canadian Territory Leadership team. Dan Wright will continue as head of Seeds for Canada.

Syngenta Canada recently made the decision to drop canola and hybrid wheat development from its portfolio.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada minister Marie-Claude Bibeau has named three new members and made two reappointments to Farm Credit Canada’s (FCC) Board of Directors. The individuals come to the board table with extensive backgrounds in agriculture and are active members in their communities.

Re-appointed for three-year terms are James Laws and Michele Hengen.

Rita Achrekar, Sylvie Chagnon and Michael Tees will serve four-year terms.

Bibeau said FCC is a trusted financial partner for Canadian farmers.

“It plays a vital role by providing specialized products and services that help agricultural businesses grow, take advantage of new market opportunities, and innovate,” Bibeau said in a news release.
