Seeding progressing well in the County, drivers asked to watch for farm vehicles on area roads

GRANDE PRAIRIE, Alta. – Some farmers in the County of Grande Prairie are half-finished seeding says Ag. Fieldman Sonja Raven.

“There are a couple that are not quite as far along. They had some of those huge rain showers hit them and that delayed things just a tad. They’re picking up speed again, so they’re going to be finished in time as well.”

Raven says it is good to see seeding going well so far this year after some challenging years recently.

“It’s going quite nicely, and, with any luck, we’ll get the rain when we need it. It is getting a little dryish down southish a bit, east of Dimsdale there. But I think overall, we’re still sitting pretty good.”

Officials are still asking motorists to watch for big farm machinery on the roads. Raven says they are asking drivers to slow down, take their time, and only pass when it is safe.

“A lot of those guys in the big machinery, they can’t see you, especially if your car is fairly close to their backside. Their mirrors just don’t cover that, so they might not even see you. They’ll pull over when they can or pass them where it’s safe but keep your distance and just give them a little bit of extra room.”

Raven says farmers will have pilot vehicles and headlights and flashing lights will be going on their machinery. She adds farmers try to stay off the roads at the busiest times. A lot of machines also come equipped with triangular slow-moving vehicle signs.
