Prince Albert RCMP officer faces murder charge

May 12, 2021 | 5:47 PM

A longtime member of the Saskatchewan RCMP is now facing a charge of first degree murder, in connection to the death of a 26-year-old man Tuesday night.

Bernie Herman, 52, is scheduled to make his first court appearance Thursday morning at Prince Albert Provincial Court.

Early Tuesday evening, police were called to a wooded area within city limits for a report of a deceased man. It’s there that they found the body of Braden Herman.

Police confirmed Bernie Herman is a 32-year-member of the RCMP, and while previously saying the victim and the accused were known to each other, have more recently explained they are not related.

The Criminal Investigations Division (CID) of the Prince Albert Police Service continues to investigate. In addition to the wooded area, police have also secured a vehicle and a residence in the 3300 Block of Dent Crescent as part of this investigation.

Police have also confirmed Herman was not on duty at the time of the incident.

Both police and family members have confirmed the identity of the victim to be Braden Herman from Prince Albert.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday in Saskatoon.

Brett Herman told paNOW his younger brother grew up in La Loche but went to high school in Prince Albert.

Due to the police connection in the case, city police have requested an independent observer to help oversee the investigation.
