SaskTel expecting data usage to soar for Mother’s Day

May 6, 2021 | 3:18 PM

SaskTel is expecting a busy day for data usage on Mother’s Day on Sunday.

It’s the busiest day of the year for voice calls but the telecommunications company says in recent years, customers have been shifting toward apps that use data.

In a news release, Don Morgan, minister responsible for SaskTel, said customers will not have to worry about going over their data capacity as the Crown corporation has extended its waiver on wireless data overages.

Recently, SaskTel broke an all-time record for data downloads at 220.29 terabytes (TB) in a single day.

SaskTel says a single TB alone would be equivalent to sending and receiving 40,000 emails, streaming 8,500 hours of music, surfing the internet for 2,000 hours, streaming HD video for 350 hours and gaming online for 1,650 hours.

“Year over year, comparing April 2020 to April 2021, SaskTel has seen wireless data downloads increase by 38 per cent and data usage on our fusion Internet network has increased by seven per cent,” SaskTel said in a release.
