Handing over the reins: local woman steps behind the big chair

A barber with a 57 year history in Prince Albert’s downtown has found someone to carry on his legacy.

Cliff Scott told paNOW it feels great to be handing over the keys to Ken’s Barber and Beauty Shop – named for his former business partner – to Lisa LaVallee.

“I was concerned that maybe I wouldn’t be able to sell my shop,” Scott said. “And not being able to see the shop continue was even harder than retiring. But now that I know that it’s in good hands with Lisa taking over, it’ll stay serving the public and my customers so I’m really happy about that.”

LaVallee has been cutting hair in Prince Albert for the better part of 20 years, but her new venture at 21 13th Street will be her first time owning her own salon.

She said she’s “excited and nervous” about the undertaking.

“I hope Cliff’s client’s feel comfortable coming back to me, being that I am a female barber it might be a big change for them but hopefully they’re willing to trust me and give me a chance,” she said.

LaVallee is hoping to reopen the shop, under the same name, on May 10, depending on when she can get the business license from the city.

Scott’s advice for success is straightforward.

“Just serve the public and they’ll look after you,” he said. “It’s as simple as that.”
