Cooke Municipal Golf Course opens for the season

Apr 28, 2021 | 5:07 PM

Local golfers were able to dust off their clubs and head to the links in Prince Albert as Cooke Municipal Golf Course opened for the season today.

Due to cooler temperatures, P.A. residents were not able to play a round until 12 p.m. on Wednesday and longtime members Mel Keating and Rene Hanchar were the first pair to tee off for the 2021 season.

Keating, who has been a member since 1989 said he is excited to be back playing for another year.

“It was a long winter, we’re pretty much couped up, can’t do anything,” Keating said. “It’s great to be out.”

Hanchar, who has been a member at the course since 1996 seconded Keating’s comments, adding his golf game could be rusty.

“This is the longest I hadn’t played golf in about 15 years because I had to come back from Florida early the last two years because of COVID,” Hanchar said.

According to a newsletter from Cooke Municipal Golf Course, the 12 p.m. start time will continue Thursday but starting Friday and through the weekend golfers can tee off starting at 8 a.m.

“Our turf care team has done a wonderful job getting the golf course through winter and preparing it for opening day,” as written in a Cooke Municipal Golf Course newsletter. “You will notice new cart paths on [holes] 11 and 15, tree trimming and removal in selective areas throughout the course and all 18 greens in great condition. We thank you for your patience and support as we prepare for an incredible season ahead.”

Tee times can be scheduled on their website or by calling 306-762-2502.
