MELFORT, Sask. — The Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) has announced the suspension of five primary licenses and one grain dealer license.

The commission said in a tweet the licenses of W.A. Grain & Pulse Solutions are suspended until Apr. 30. It is prohibited from selling stocks in store, accepting producer deliveries, and contracting new grain sales.

CGC said any producer owed money by this company for grain deliveries should contact the commission immediately. Anyone doing business with the company as of Apr. 20 will not be protected by security under the Canada Grain Act.

W.A. Grain & Pulse Solutions has facilities in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Prince Edward Island.

A Saskatchewan rancher has been named Nature Conservancy Canada’s director of Grasslands Conservation for Western Canada.

Saskatchewan Forage Council president and Lacadena-area rancher Tamara Carter said the position is an important acknowledgment of the stewardship role ranchers play in protecting and enhancing grassland ecosystems.

“The importance of native grasslands is well known to ranchers, but the fact that these endangered ecosystems play a significant role in protecting wildlife and the environment is often ignored or distorted by others,” Carter said.

In early March, the Weston Family Foundation announced the launch of the Weston Family Prairie Grasslands Initiative with nearly $25 million awarded to five organizations to collaborate on one of the largest prairie grasslands conservation efforts in Canadian history.

This initiative will fund organizations working with local communities to advance ecologically and economically sustainable long-term solutions for this critical landscape.

Carter said the Weston Family Foundation looked past negative messaging to find accurate information and made the generous donation.

“To support ranchers’ efforts to improve stewardship on their native grasslands,” she said. “That’s a very progressive approach.”

The five organizations receiving funding through the Weston Family Prairie Grasslands Initiative are Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC), Ducks Unlimited Canada, Saskatchewan Stock Growers Foundation, Grasslands National Park (Parks Canada) and Meewasin Valley Authority. Total funding will be distributed across these five organizations over a five-year period.
