Apr 13, 2021 | 11:06 PM

The monkey may have been getting a little comfy on Logan Linklater’s back, but the Prince Albert Raider rookie emphatically got rid of the annoying creature with a goal and a celebratory scream during a 4-2 victory over the Regina Pats Tuesday in the Subway Hub Centre.

After linemate Tyson Laventure swung and missed on a knee-drop shot in the second period, the puck slid kindly to Linklater who then used his hands to beat Pats goaltender Matthew Kieper with a nice forehand move. As he went to celebrate, Linklater looked up to the ceiling and yelled to himself both in triumph and relief to get his first WHL career goal.

“I just closed my eyes and just screamed. It felt so good to get that out,” Linklater said on his reaction to getting his first goal. “Big weight off my shoulders… I just screamed it all out. I looked up and I think I said ‘oh my God’ or something like that. Just getting that out of the way felt so good.”

It took him 15 games, but Linklater did have numerous chances in that time before it all finally clicked into place on Tuesday. Raiders head coach Marc Habscheid has liked what Linklater has brought to the table in his 17-year-old season.

“He’s a good player. He’s smart, he competes well and sees the ice real well. It was just a matter of time,” Habscheid said.

After a quiet, scoreless period for both sides, the Raiders completely exploded for a season-high four goals in the second period. It’s also tied for the highest-scoring sandwich stanza in the WHL so far this season.

Within the first 10:02 of the period, Tyson Laventure was set up by Linklater to draw first blood, Justin Nachbaur followed up soon thereafter before Evan Herman scored in his third straight game and Linklater got his first. It was 4-0 Raiders at that point and remained that way until Raiders defenceman Landon Kosior took a five-minute major penalty for a high hit on Zack Smith. Kosior was ejected from the game with 6:49 left in the third period. The Pats scored two quick goals after that, with Logan Nijhoff scoring on 4-on-4 action, while Ryker Evans scored for the Pats on the major power play.

Raider rookie defenceman Tayem Gislason got an assist, his first in the WHL. Remy Aquilon had a pair of assists, giving him 11 on the season.

Former Pat, Raider goaltender Max Paddock made 18 saves on 20 shots for the victory. Matthew Kieper stopped 37 of 41 for the Pats.

The victory puts the Raiders’ record up to 6-8-2-1. It’s also the first time the Raiders have won back-to-back games this season.
