Donations for Sask. family reach $11,000 following tragic house fire

Apr 13, 2021 | 7:30 AM

Less than a week after a tragic house fire south of Prince Albert, support is pouring in for the family involved.

In addition to the death of their young child, the couple also lost all their personal belongings. Desiree Hesson, owner of S2DIO in Prince Albert and a family friend, has been helping collect donations. She told paNOW her heart sank when she heard the devastating news

“My soul just broke and I thought we have to help the family somehow,” she said.

On April 18, S2DIO will be hosting a fundraiser. A total of seven spin classes have been booked back-to-back starting at 9 a.m.

“It’s $10 to drop in to any of those classes and the full $10 will get turned around and donated to the family,” Hesson said, adding the instructors are also donating their time.

In the early morning hours of April 8, fire crews and RCMP were dispatched to a property in the Lily Plain area, located within the Rural Municipality (RM) of Duck Lake. Div. 6 Councillor Paul Allman said the tragic event has been felt by everyone.

“The RM goes all the way to Rosthern but I think everybody in the RM feels for the family,” he said, adding he is also not surprised by the tremendous outpouring of support given how close everyone is in the community.

In a statement provided to paNOW, the family expressed their gratitude for all the support they have received.

“It’s just so incredible to see people wrap us in so much love and kindness,” they said.

A number of other Prince Albert businesses have also stepped up including Mann Northway, Original Joe’s, Riverside Dodge, and Montana’s. The Sask Rivers School Division has also offered support.

As of Monday, over $11,000 in cash has been received, as well as “tons” of gift cards.
