Mediation offer declined by local woman facing multiple charges

A local woman facing charges stemming from an incident in December at the La Ronge Health Centre has, for now, declined to move forward with mediation.

Emily Kammermayer was in court on Monday where the Crown offered her the opportunity to pursue mediation via alternative measures to have her charges withdrawn. She is charged with assaulting three officers, assault with a weapon and resisting arrest. So far, she has represented herself in court and has not yet entered a plea.

“I wouldn’t have a criminal record after completing mediation and I’m undecided at this time if I want to do mediation,” Kammermayer said. “I have yet to even see my disclosure and I would like to look at the facts of the case before I can make a decision on whether or not I would like to continue to go ahead with trial or going ahead with mediation.”

During a press conference held March 25 by the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples, Vice-Chief Kim Beaudin called for the charges to be dropped. He said the best case scenario in Kammermayer’s case would be mediation.

“That is what he really believes and, for me, I just have to go with what my instincts are telling me,” Kammermayer said. “I feel really uneasy with just jumping to mediation, even though that would save me the trouble of possibly having to go to trial. It would be a quicker and easier way of going about this for sure.”

Senior Crown Prosecutor Dorinda Stahl confirmed to larongeNOW mediation was offered to Kammermayer and it was subsequently declined. She explained the next step will involve Kammermayer being sent the disclosure on her case and it will be up to her how to proceed further.

Stahl noted alternative measures is a way for those with charges to deal with them outside of the criminal justice system. She said if those individuals are prepared to accept responsibility, then there are people in the community who will work with the accused to come to a resolution.

“The matter comes back to court and if the Crown is satisfied through hearing from the alternative measures facilitator that the relationship has been looked at and some of the work has been done, they will prepare to withdraw those charges,” Stahl said.

Kammermayer will next appear in court April 22 at 9:30 a.m.
