MELFORT — Tighter U.S. hog supplies could improve the profit potential for pork producers this spring and summer.

The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Quarterly Hogs and Pigs Report showed a higher-than-expected decline in numbers of pigs on U.S. farms.

Hams Marketing Services Director of Risk Management Tyler Fulton said supplies will be on the tighter side for the next ten months.

“In North Americas as a whole we’ve been on a really solid run, both from a cash market standpoint and from a futures market standpoint,” Fulton said. “Since December we’ve seen futures values, in particular in the spring and summer time frame, increase 20 to 25 per cent of their value so it’s been a really solid run up.”

Fulton said a stronger Canadian dollar is having a negative impact on prices but overall, the outlook for profitability is very good until at least September.

The Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan (APAS) has re-elected Todd Lewis as president for 2021.

At the APAS annual meeting the board also re-elected vice presidents Ian Boxall of Tisdale and Bill Prybylski of Willowbrook.

APAS members received the final report from the Rural Connectivity Task Force that investigated the causes of poor rural internet and cellular service. The detailed report will be released today.

Six other resolutions were presented including a motion calling for the rejection of the draft voluntary Code of Practice for Grain Production.
