What to Plant in March

Mar 16, 2021 | 8:58 AM

We know that your green thumbs are itching to start seedlings indoors!

Here is some info about what to plant in March.

First, check the seed package for the number of weeks needed to grow transplants and count backwards from your average last spring frost date which varies depending on whether you live in the southern prairies or the far north.

(Editor’s Note: a Google check of “last frost date for {my area} will get you the information you need.)

So, what can you start now?

Prairie-dwellers can start celery, celeraic, leeks, Spanish onions (seeds not bulbs) and parsley now. Hold off on starting tomatoes until April, unless you have enough lighting and space to pot them into bigger pots. Tomatoes need lots of light and outgrow small pots quickly. A robust root system is key to healthy plants.

If you live in the far north, you need more of a head start. Sow cabbage, Brussels sprouts, brocolli, leeks, Spanish onions, parsley and tomatoes indoors soon.

We’ll tell you more about each these veggies in future posts.
