RM asked to address speed concerns on local grid

Mar 16, 2021 | 10:00 AM

Tammy Dunn is tired of seeing vehicles fly by her house, disobeying the post speed limit, and fears an accident is waiting to happen.

For the safety of her family, she’s written a letter to the Rural Municipality (RM) of Prince Albert council, requesting the speed limit on her road may be changed from 80km/hr to 60km/hr. Dunn told paNOW there is a big hill less than a 100 feet from her driveway, and it’s almost impossible for a driver to see what’s happening on the road, until they are up on top off the hill.

“The semis go crazy speed limits down here and when a semi is loaded full of grain or whatever, they can’t stop,” she said, adding if they even do try to brake, they put themselves in danger too.

The grid road Dunn lives on is located off Spencer Road, and is technically unmarked. There’s one other family living in the area. Adding to Dunn’s concern is her young son who has Down’s Syndrome, doesn’t know the concept of danger, and has made at least one attempt to bolt towards the road.

“We thought about putting up a gate or a fence but price wise it’s not in our budget,” she said.

Reeve Eric Schmalz told paNOW he is aware of the Dunn family’s letter, and said council is very concerned whenever a public safety issue is raised.

“We are gonna consider it at the next council meeting, [April 8],” he said.

With respect to looking at other roads in the RM, Schmalz did not dismiss it.

“It’s under constant review,” he said.
