Raider captain ‘out indefinitely’ with a hand injury; Game 3 preview vs. Wheat Kings

Mar 16, 2021 | 12:00 PM

The Prince Albert Raiders will be without their captain Kaiden Guhle for the near future.

Prior to Tuesday’s game against the Brandon Wheat Kings, the Raiders announced on Twitter Guhle is “out indefinitely” with a hand injury he incurred during Sunday’s 2-1 shootout defeat to the Moose Jaw Warriors.

Guhle had a goal and an assist in the first two games this season—including scoring the Raiders’ lone goal in their 2-1 shootout defeat on Sunday. Guhle, the first overall pick in 2017, is also a drafted and signed prospect of the Montreal Canadiens.

Game 3, Raiders vs. Wheat Kings

Both teams have three points out of their first two games, with the Raiders defeating the Regina Pats 6-3 to open the season before falling to the Warriors 2-1 in a shootout Sunday.

The Wheat Kings lost their first game to the Warriors 4-3 in overtime, before registering a 3-2 win over the Winnipeg ICE.

Wheat Kings captain Braden Schneider has been leading from the back. In two games, Schneider has two goals and an assist in his first two games. He’s tied for the team lead in both of those categories with 17-year-old forward Jake Chiasson, the 15th overall pick in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft. The two have combined for four of the Wheat Kings’ six goals so far, with Brett Hyland and Ben McCartney scoring the other two.

The Raiders scoring has been a lot more spread out, as seven Raiders have scored one goal through their first two games (Reece Vitelli, Ozzy Wiesblatt, Logan Danis, Kaiden Guhle, Evan Herman, Matthew Culling and Tyson Laventure).

The Raiders could have an advantage in goal, regardless of who head coach Marc Habscheid decides to start. After his 24-25 performance in a 2-1 shootout defeat, Carter Serhyenko leads the league with a .960 save percentage and 0.92 goals against average (among goalies who have played at least one full game).

Max Paddock has a .903 save percentage and 3.00 goals against average after his 28-save performance against his old Pats team.

Both of those figures outrank those of Wheat Kings goaltender Ethan Kruger (.891 save percentage, 2.97 goals against average).

The Raiders and Wheat Kings will battle it out at 4 p.m. at the Brandt Centre. Tune in to Trevor Redden’s call of the game on CKBI radio.
