Spring-like weather here for the week

Mar 15, 2021 | 1:57 PM

It feels like spring this week with temperatures in the short term as much as ten degrees above the norm.

Terri Lang, meteorologist with Environment Canada and Climate Change, says the warmer weather is anticipated to stick around through the weekend.

“We can feel the sun getting higher in the sky and there is warmth to it…helping to bring spring with longer day light hours, “ Lang said.

It’s not likely any records will be broken but with daytime highs that are warm and with below freezing overnight, the melting of snow is slow which is beneficial.

“A big ridge of high pressure in the upper atmosphere is on the warm side of the jet stream so it looks like that pattern will stay for a bit. After the weekend it will get more westerly and that means closer to seasonal values, ” Lang explained.

Prince Albert and Melfort’s forecast shows highs of 6 C Wednesday and as as much as 11 C by Friday. The average temperatures for this time of year historically show a high of minus 0.6 C and a low of minus 12.9 C.

Lang explained Saskatchewan can see very big fluctuations in temperatures this time of year, so we should enjoy this while it lasts. She added that in Saskatchewan we tend to pay for the warm weather later on.

Last year was a case in point. On April 6, things looked very different to how this week is shaping up.

While no big storms or cold Arctic air is expected in the coming weeks, more seasonal temperatures are expected after the weekend.
