Saskatchewan rural leaders meet virtually

Mar 9, 2021 | 9:56 AM

MELFORT, Sask. — Representatives from rural municipalities in Saskatchewan will be meeting for the next two days.

While the event is being held online, the SARM convention will be following a similar format.

Several provincial and federal ministers will speak to the gathering including Winnipeg MP and special prairie representative of the cabinet Jim Carr.

SARM President Ray Orb said they are not getting the money they have been asking for on federal infrastructure funding.

“We have over 1,400 bridges. They either need repair or replacement and we’re asking for a lot more in federal funding. We think we need more in the neighborhood of hundreds of millions of dollars to replace some of these bridges,” Orb said.

There will also be discussion on the COVID-19 pandemic. Orb said adequate rural broadband is even more important this year so rural residents can get information and book vaccinations.

“We’re going to have a good communications plan in place with our rural municipalities to make sure that no one in rural Saskatchewan is missed as far as getting the vaccine,” Orb said.

The last session this afternoon will include discussion on several resolutions.

Premier Scott Moe will speak tomorrow. This will be followed by the traditional Bear Pit session with the provincial cabinet.
