CFUW Celebrate International Women’s Day with Zoom Presentation

Mar 4, 2021 | 10:09 AM

The Honorable Laura Ross helped CFUW Prince Albert and guests celebrate International Women’s Day during a Zoom Meeting March 2nd.

Ross is the Minister of Parks, Culture and Sport and the Minister responsible for the Status of Women.

“Women’s issues are everyone’s issues,” said Ross. “We need to move the needle forward for the status of women.”

Ross has represented Canada on an international level for issues such as violence against women and education for girls. But she spoke most passionately about a project in Regina which she at first financed out of her own pocket.

The Self Esteem project helps girls and their mothers learn positive body image and how to protect themselves from becoming victims online.

Ross said she felt at home with the 21 women who Zoomed into the meeting from across the province.

They represented the Prince Albert Council of Women, the Saskatchewan CFUW and PA CFUW.

Ross offered her email address, laurarossmls@sasktel.net for more information about organizing conferences for girls like those she’s been leading annually in Regina.

She encouraged participants to continue in their leadership roles. She said it’s important to have women’s voices in decision-making positions.

Ross was honest and open about a variety of issues raised by participants:

  • Addressing the recommendations of the Missing and Murdered Aboriginal Girls inquiry report;
  • Public Service Announcement on television that the Status of Women helped to create that challenges ideas about inter-personal violence;
  • Anti-bullying and helping girls grow up to be strong women;
  • Strengthening long-term care standards and those who work in long-term care;
  • RCMP may be moving towards providing more information through Clare’s Law as City Police do now in Saskatchewan. Clare’s Law allows police to warn someone their partner has a history of violence.

CFUW Prince Albert is celebrating its 90th this year.

The Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) is a non-profit organization with 97 clubs across Canada with a membership of 6,330. It’s work is directly focussed on making a positive change in advancing women’s rights through advocacy regarding women’s issues, promoting lifelong learning, and raising funds for education, libraries and the creative arts.
