Feels like spring in Saskatchewan

Warmer weather on the horizon in Saskatchewan

Mar 3, 2021 | 1:03 PM

Temperatures could hit highs of 10 Celcius in places like Prince Albert and the Battlefords by the weekend. A high of 11 C is in the forecast for the Melfort area.

Meteorologist Terri Lang with Environment Canada said temperatures will struggle a bit more to get warm in areas with a lot of snow cover, while locations with less or no snow have the possibility of breaking temperature records.

An upper ridge is giving Saskatchewan the nice temperatures but will sag a bit and somewhat collapse, according to Lang. A low-pressure system will move through the south bringing in the cooler air and more seasonal temperatures.

“Thirty-year averages see highs around minus four and overnight lows of minus 16 so probably closer to those values or maybe a little warmer,” said Lang.

As much as we would like to put our winter jackets and boots away, spring hasn’t quite sprung yet. Lang reminds us that “in March we never say never.”

“March and April are some of the times when we get our biggest storms and our heaviest snowfalls so keeping that in mind and knowing that our record temperatures are still way in the minus 30s,” said Lang.

In the meantime, we’ll enjoy the warmer weather while it lasts. Temperatures with day time highs in the plus and overnight lows in the minus have the potential to cause black ice on highways. What looks wet is actually ice, so Lang encouraged caution while driving on highways.
