Making a splash in Midtown

Mar 1, 2021 | 3:53 PM

An area of Prince Albert’s midtown could have easily passed for a small community wading pool Monday, following a water main break.

The actual break occurred over the lunch hour near third Ave. E., and between eighth and ninth streets. The depth was well over ankle deep, and vehicles passing through were forced to slow and proceed with caution.

The city crew was very quick to respond when a local resident made the initial distress call. (Nigel Maxwell/ paNOW Staff)

By 3 p.m. the water was turned off and crews were on scene, working to investigate the source of the problem. Water and sewer manager Jeff Soderberg explained to paNOW the most challenging aspect of these breaks, during the cold weather, is getting a steamer in to thaw the pipe so the water valve can be turned off. He acknowledged this particular break was a bit of a gusher.

“It’s not that it’s a bigger main by any means. It’s probably a bigger hole that happened on the pipe itself,” he said.

There is no timeline for how long the city may take patching the pipe. It’s also unknown if any nearby properties were affected.
