Safety for Seniors

Feb 26, 2021 | 9:53 AM

In my last write-up I talked about loneliness and the impact Covid-19 is having on seniors.

This next chat I would like to discuss safety for seniors. On-line safety is an important topic as older people become familiar with social media such as Facebook and Instagram.

There are numerous ways to feel safe online. You can unfollow accounts that make you feel uncomfortable. You can treat people online how you would in person. Enforce boundaries by setting up your privacy settings. Use a password manager and report and block on-line bullies.

I think it is also important to remind folks about the ability to protect your personal information.

There seems to be numerous stories of people receiving phone calls and being told that the Canada Revenue Agency is investigating them. They are told they just need to verify their personal information such as birth-date and social insurance number. Please do not give out this information unless you truly know the source. Identification theft is on the rise and seniors are vulnerable to this type of scam.

The last caution is using your credit card safely.

You should only shop online from a secure computer. That means avoiding public places, such as Internet cafes, public libraries and computer labs.

When you shop with your credit card online, it’s important that you only go to websites you trust. Avoid clicking on email links, particularly in unsolicited emails, because links can redirect you to a phony website created for the sole purpose of stealing your credit card information.

If you are unsure how to set these safety guards in place, then ask a trusted family member, friend or a local business that specializes in computers to help secure your personal information.

The internet can bring a sense of connection to family and friends during this time.

Let’s be safe and smart about our online usage and enjoy the benefits of this wonderful technology.
