MELFORT, Sask. – The Saskatchewan Wheat Development Commission is encouraging grain farmers to participate in the Canada Grain Act review.

The Commission wants farmers to make their voices heard as changes will have a direct impact on their farming operations.

Sask Wheat chair Brett Halstead said the Canadian Grain Commission has a number of oversight roles.

“We are looking for improved data collection and reporting that came out of our annual general meeting through a number of resolutions back in January,” Halstead said. “We figure that might be a way because the grain commission does do some data reporting around this already but we could make it more timely.”

Farmers have until April 30 to submit their feedback.

Last summer, research was conducted on preharvest options for flax.

Heather Sorestad with the East Central Research Foundation in Yorkton said CDC Bethune and CDC Glas were used in the study.

She said seed and stem moisture was significantly reduced with preharvest products but while desiccation using Round Up was slow but it provided excellent weed control.

While the products used in the study are registered in Saskatchewan, their use may restrict options for grain sales.
