MELFORT, Sask. – More than half of the country’s dairy farmers have received a compensation payment promised by the federal government.

Agriculture and agri-food Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau said roughly 5,000 Canadian dairy farmers have received $267.1 million under the second year of the Dairy Direct Payments Program.

Dairy farmers will receive $1.75 billion in direct payments over the course of four years. The owner of a farm with 80 dairy cows would get $38,000 for each of the remaining years.

Producers must register through the Canadian Dairy Commission prior to March 31 to receive a payment for the current program year.

The federal government is providing compensation to supply-managed sectors affected by recent trade deals.

4-H Canada is recognizing a Saskatchewan leader.

Duane Bristow will receive a lifetime honourary member of 4-H Canada award.

Bristow was actively involved in the expansion of the 4-H Saskatchewan Centre and the centennial celebrations in 2017.

He also served as a director and chair of the 4-H board of directors and as a trustee and chair of the Canadian 4-H Foundation.

Nancy Orr of Prince Edward Island will also receive the honour.

The 4-H leadership awards program will be held virtually on Feb. 22.

The panel that evaluates international trade disputes in the United States has squashed a complaint about Canadian blueberries.

The U.S. International Trade Commission said recent spikes in foreign blueberry imports are no threat to domestic producers.

In September, U.S. trade representative Robert Lighthizer asked the commission to investigate the potential harm done by imports from Canada, Mexico, Chile and Peru.

Canadian growers said they are delighted with the news and look forward to continuing to work with their U.S. counterparts.
