P.A. mayor wants new rules for builds in residential neighbourhoods

Feb 4, 2021 | 1:21 PM

Mayor Greg Dionne says he plans to propose changes to city bylaws to ensure new developments fit with existing neighbourhoods.

In particular Dionne is concerned about residents on River Street who lost access to sunlight or views when multi-story “monsters” were put in next door.

“I don’t think I should have the right to infringe on my neighbours that have lived there for 20 years, just because I bought an old house on the river and now I’m going to build a three-story [home],” he told council.

Dionne made the comments during a discussion on a new informational pamphlet the city has created advising residents on, “how to be a good neighbour during a construction project.”

He explained he plans to bring forward a motion to mandate new builds “reflect the neighbourhood” at a future council meeting.

“I am going to push that we change the bylaw,” he said. “Because there has to be common sense. Does it look out of place? Yes? Then it shouldn’t be there.”
