City of P.A. warns residents about coyotes at Little Red

Feb 3, 2021 | 3:08 PM

The City of Prince Albert is issuing an advisory to users of Little Red River Park to be aware of coyotes, after the remains of a large animal – likely a deer – were found Tuesday in the vicinity of Cosmo Lodge and the ski hill.

Conservation officer Sgt. Casey Howey told paNOW coyotes generally don’t cause problems for humans, but it’s still good to know what to do in case of a close encounter.

“Treat it like you would any other wild animal,” Howey said. “Keep your distance, make noise and don’t approach it… don’t run away or turn your back on a coyote, don’t allow a coyote to get between you and your child or pet, keep children close, and if you have to, clap your hands, blow a whistle and try to make yourself look larger.”

Coyotes are more active during February and March during their breeding season, and while they may be out and about more, it’s usually nothing people should worry about, Howey explained.

“They generally are looking for their own type of mate, so normally it’s not an issue,” he said.

Parks Manager Tim Yeaman reminded residents to keep their dogs leashed in Little Red at all times, as per park policy, to prevent them from potentially becoming prey for a coyote.

“Enjoy the park, but do it responsibly, do it safely,” Yeaman said. “Be a responsible pet owner and don’t put your pet at risk because you’re not willing to leash them.”

If you encounter an animal that is aggressive or looks sick, contact the Ministry of Environment TIPP line at 1-800-667-7561 or #5555 from a SaskTel cellphone.
