The G3 Grow Beyond Scholarship is looking to reward students across Canada.

G3, along with Agriculture in the Classroom Canada, will award six scholarships of $4,000 each to students beginning their post-secondary education, in any discipline.

To apply, students must explain their vision for the future of agriculture in a two-to-four-minute video essay.

In addition to the scholarship, the winners’ school will also receive $1,000.

Entries will be judged by a panel of industry professionals and the public via online voting.

Health Canada said it will not consider cruelty to animals when it reviews whether using poisons such as strychnine to kill pests and predators should be continued.

It said in a ruling there is no scientific way to measure how animals suffer. Animal welfare groups, humane societies, veterinarians, and scientists question the use of strychnine and two other poisons used to control gophers and predators.

Sara Dubois with the B.C. SPCA said other countries have developed ways of assessing how much animals suffer from various poisons.

The Saskatchewan government has expressed concern about a ban and the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association opposed it. Gophers burrow underground causing damage to crops and the burrows can injure livestock.
