MELFORT, Sask. – Lonny McKague has been reappointed commissioner of the Canadian Grain Commission (CGC).

McKague has represented the federal government in international trade missions with key customers of Canadian grain.

Prior to joining the CGC, he served as a director of Ogema Elevator, former president of the Canadian Limousin Association and the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association.

McKague was first appointed commissioner in 2017.

Protein Industries Canada reported 2020 was a good year despite the pandemic.

CEO Bill Gruel said five Saskatchewan-based projects worth roughly $100 million were approved last year.

He said the new projects will create over 100 jobs and the development of 150 new products and new patents.

The federal government’s growth strategy is to create 5,000 new jobs and add $4.5 billion to the Canadian economy.

This is the 100th anniversary of the Canadian Grain Commission’s (CGC) Grain Statistics Weekly report.

The report has helped shape the history of the agriculture sector by being a source of transparent and unbiased information on grain movement.

This information is used by market analysts, researchers, producers, grain handlers and buyers.

The data in the reports helps businesses and grain producers make more informed business decisions and compete in the global grain trade.

CGC took over publication of the report in 1971. In 2006, the report was made available for no charge.

It was first published by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics in January 1921.
