Carrot River WWII Vet Turns 100

A Carrot River resident will hit the centennial mark on Feb. 2.

Kenneth Alfred (Alf) Sauder will turn 100 years old. Sauder served in the Second World War (WWII) from 1942 to 1945 with 413 (Tusker) Squadron.

Sauder’s family is from Carrot River where they ran a family farm. He returned to town following WWII to take over the farm and carry on. He enjoys curling, fishing, hunting, and cards – especially crib.

Sauder’s son in-law Bob Duns told northeastNOW he’s unsure of Sauder’s tips to live to 100.

“He hasn’t passed one on to me,” Duns laughed. “I’ll have to quiz him on that. We’re pretty excited. He’s not terribly excited in a way because he doesn’t really want a birthday party. They normally would have birthday cake and we’d have grandchildren around too… but that can’t happen with COVID-19 going on.”

Sauder is temporarily in hospital while waiting to be placed in a special care home. Due to COVID-19 related health protocols, his family is unable to visit and celebrate as they normally would.

“Our plans for celebration are limited. We had some ideas… possibly arrange a drive-by with our family and his relatives, and community folks who would like to participate. That’s kind of in the air at the moment, not knowing where he’s going to be living,” Duns said.

If the planned drive-by is unable to go on Feb. 2, Duns said they’d likely still hold one whenever Sauder is discharged from hospital and is in a care home. He encouraged any Carrot River and area residents to check the town’s Facebook page for updates if they’d like to participate.

Until then, anyone who’d like to wish Sauder a happy 100th birthday can write a letter to Alf Sauder; Box 10 – Carrot River, Sask. S0E 0L0.
