Both Ahtahkakoop school and band office were placed on high alert Thursday afternoon following an incident behind the school.

A spokesperson for the band office told paNOW, a vehicle driving erratically, hit a hill and came to a stop in the park area near the school. While no student was directly threatened, the school enacted its “safe plan” that students and staff followed.

Another person close to the incident told paNOW the lone occupant walked on foot across the school yard. Several witnesses said the man was carrying a gun but no shots were fired.

The spokesperson at the band office also said she was told RCMP had made an arrest. RCMP Cpl. Rob King could not confirm the claim.

“There was an increased police presence in the area and right now it’s still under investigation,” he said.

King said he was not aware of any risk to the school or public.

According to a Facebook post from the school Thursday night, there will be no classes Friday. Staff will be available but no students will be in attendance.

“Please be advised that we have a guidance counsellor and two mental health therapists available for anyone who needs mental health support,” the statement said.

paNOW will have more information as it develops.
