Extreme cold warning issued for much of Saskatchewan

Jan 23, 2021 | 5:12 PM

It might be best to cozy up indoors, as an extreme cold warning has been issued for much of the province.

A period of very cold wind chills is expected to be felt on Saturday evening, as lows in the -30’s along with winds of 10 to 15 km/h will produce extreme cold windchills of -40 or lower.

“An arctic ridge of high pressure will help clear skies over central Saskatchewan, western Manitoba and Manitoba Interlake regions tonight and Sunday morning,” Environment Canada wrote in a statement. “Temperatures are expected to moderate in the morning.

“Extreme cold puts everyone at risk.”

Environment Canada is reminding people to cover up if you are leaving the house, as frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.

“If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside,” they wrote.

Most of central Saskatchewan, including Saskatoon, is listed in the warning. A similar warning covers the far north.

The full list of regions impacted is included on the environment Canada website by clicking here.
