Smokes Poutinerie headed for world domination!

Jan 19, 2021 | 1:55 PM

Hand-cut fries, Quebec cheese curds and the tastiest gravy on the planet.

Poutine is an iconic dish that deserves a food category on its own and if Smokes Poutinerie has anything to do with it, the classic Canadian cuisine would be enjoyed by people across the world.

Even a global pandemic can’t stop the expansion of the brand in North America, the Middle East, Europe and the United Kingdom.

One of the newest poutineries is located right here in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Wendy Pellegrini opened Smokes Poutinerie in Carlton Court Plaza, across from Carlton High School on 6th Ave. E in March of 2020.

“We figured it would be a great location given its proximity to the school,” said Pellegrini. “And the company has a really great policy that if a customer comes in with their own bagged lunch, they can still sit down at one of our tables and eat with their friends.”

Building relationships in the community is important to the company. Recently, they gave 750 lbs. of fresh potatoes to Riverside School for Christmas hampers and have donated to the local food bank and participated in hot lunch programs in the past.

Smokes Poutinerie serves over 30 varieties of its famous poutine. They all start with a base of hand-cut fries sourced from Prince Edward Island, squeaky cheese curds from Quebec and your choice of their signature or veggie gravy.

“Our fries are gluten free and our cheese curds are 99 per cent lactose free. We use gluten free oil and we also have one gluten free gravy, so customers can come in and enjoy the food without having to worry about,” said Pellegrini.

The unlimited variations of topping options take the poutine to a whole other level. Whether your preference is beef, chicken, vegetables, pork or simply a different type of sauce, even the craziest of cravings can be satisfied.

“Cheeseburger and Chicken, Bacon, Ranch poutine are among the favorites here in Prince Albert,” said Pellegrini. “But we have a new one called ‘Avalanche’ that features chipotle pulled pork, grilled chicken, double-smoked bacon and cream ranch dressing.”

Other poutine recipe options include Philly Cheesesteak, Perogy, Buffalo Chicken and Butter Chicken-less Cauliflower. Sides include boneless wings, deep fried pepperoni, fried cauliflower bites, pogo dogs and popcorn chicken.

“It’s the ultimate Canadian comfort food that you can make your own,” said Pellegrini.
