Agriculture Roundup for Friday January 15, 2021

Jan 15, 2021 | 11:24 AM

Canada’s African Swine Fever Action plan is being developed with a focus on four pillars.

Canadian Pork Council Executive Director John Ross said biosecurity is about prevention.

“If we can just avoid the disease all together so we have a big focus on biosecurity at the border and on our farms,” Ross said. “There’s a section on preparedness. This is about getting ready.”

Ross said it is important to have the right procedures in place in order to respond quickly and in a very effective manner.

Ross said an outbreak would be devastating so business continuity is a priority.

“If 70 per cent of sales stopped, either sales of pork or sales of live pigs, how do we keep that entire chain intact while we don’t have access for 70 per cent of our sales?” Ross said. “We have a business continuity group that’s investigating that piece.”

Ross said communications is a complex pillar with much work still to be done.

He said the collective efforts of the federal and provincial governments and industry are serving the pork sector well.
