MELFORT, Sask. – Agriculture research received a financial boost from both the federal and Saskatchewan governments today.

Speaking at the virtual CropSphere conference this morning, Premier Scott Moe announced $9.8 million in funding for 39 crop-related research projects through Saskatchewan’s Agriculture Development Fund (ADF).

Moe said Saskatchewan’s agriculture sector has incredible growth potential and this targeted investment will help producers and agri-businesses deliver what the world needs.

“Our producers, our scientists and our researchers make a huge difference in the lives of millions of people around the world,” Moe said. “Saskatchewan is quite literally feeding the world.”

In 2020, Saskatchewan farmers grew the second largest crop ever at 39 million tonnes of grains and pulses. The Saskatchewan government has set a goal to increase crop production to 45 million tonnes, agriculture exports increase to $20 billion and value-added revenue increase to $10 billion. Moe said this research will push the industry closer to this goal.

Ministry of Agriculture research director Barb Ziesman said producers benefit from the new knowledge and discoveries into disease resistance, understanding herbicide resistance, increased yields, and new varieties.

“Really, what ADF is doing is helping make Saskatchewan producers more profitable and more productive while increasing the competitiveness of our industry,” Ziesman said.

Several industry partners contributed roughly $3.1 million in funding. This includes the Western Grains Research Foundation, Saskatchewan Alfalfa Seed Producers, Sask Barley, Sask Canola, Saskatchewan Oat Development Commission, Saskatchewan Pulse Growers, Sask Wheat, Alberta Wheat Commission and Manitoba Crop Alliance.
