Canada’s grain act under review

Jan 12, 2021 | 3:21 PM

MELFORT, Sask. – The consultation phase of the Canada Grain Act review has begun.

The government is seeking feedback from grain industry stakeholders on ways to update for legislation that has been mostly unchanged for nearly 50 years.

Agriculture and Agri-Food minister Marie-Claude Bibeau said for farmers to be competitive they need a legislative framework that reflects the realities of modern agriculture.

The consultation will allow the federal government to hear the perspectives of the sector on how grain is bought, sold, delivered, and handled.

“Consultations will be held online until April 30. We need your ideas on changes to the act that will ensure Canada remains a strong competitor in the global grain market.”

There have also been other attempts to update the Canada Grain Act. Bill C-48 was tabled by the Conservative government in 2014 but died on the Order Table when the 2015 election was called.

Bibeau announced the consultation phase of the Canada Grain Act review while speaking at the CropSphere annual general meetings, hosted by the Saskatchewan crop commissions.
