Hope and the Future: grain producers have positive outlook for 2021

Dec 31, 2020 | 10:08 AM

The COVID-19 pandemic makes 2020 a year many may prefer to forget. While we’re not out of the woods yet, farmnewsNOW has chosen to produce our usual series of end-of-year stories with a focus on hope and the future.

Farmers across the Prairies are thankful for the beautiful fall weather that allowed them to get the crop in the bin.

Irma, Alberta farmer Kent Erikson said he and his family experienced a few difficult harvests, so this year was a relief.

“We did some flax in May of this year due to the 2019 harvest,” Erikson said. “That puts a lot of stress on your operation when you have crop left out so this year, we had a great harvest.”

The pressure on the family and the farm was lifted to have that better harvest in 2020.

Excellent commodity prices at the end of the year have helped and better weather this fall as well as improved markets will make planning for 2021 a little easier.

“We grow eight different crops here so it helps with the ability to change your line of thinking on how you’re going to run equipment or update some equipment,” Erikson said.

He is grateful for good health this year especially as the family is very involved in the farming operation.
