MELFORT, Sask. — Farmers across Saskatchewan found 2020 to be a challenge.

Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan President Todd Lewis said farmers were able to successfully harvest a lot of crop left over winter, in the spring.

He added there was uncertainty around COVID-19 yet harvest was quite good despite some weather issues.

“Farmers learned a lot about drying grain, a lot of producers had never had the experience of drying that many bushels before,” Lewis said. “As spring wore on though it did turn into a great spring for getting seeding done.”

As far as COVID goes, Lewis believes farmers weathered the storm quite well.

He said grain movement is booming and grain prices have improved in the fall.

Excellent commodity prices at the end of the year have helped an Irma, Alberta farmer.

Kent Erickson said good weather this fall and improved markets will make planning for 2021 a little easier.

“We grow eight different crops here so it helps with the ability to change your line of thinking on how you’re going to run equipment or update some equipment,” Erikson said.

He is grateful for good health this year especially as the family is very involved in the farming operation.
