Prince Albert to receive first doses of COVID-19 vaccine week of Jan. 4

Nearly 4,000 doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine are expected to be delivered to Prince Albert the week of Jan. 4, Health Minister Paul Merriman said in a press conference Tuesday.

It was not immediatly clear who will receive the first 3,900 P.A. jabs announced Tuesday. So far in Regina and Saskatoon, healthcare workers have been the recipients of the inital doses.

The federal government is also expected to approve the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine in the coming days, Merriman said.

“And those shipments [of the Moderna vaccine] should begin almost immediately after approval,” he said, continuing that the first doses of the Moderna vaccine will be given to residents and staff of longterm care homes.

Saskatchewan Health Authority officials have said the Moderna vaccine is easier to store and transport making it better suited to rural and remote areas.

Meanwhile, Merriman also said a second dose of the Pfizer vaccine has arrived for healthcare workers who are part of a pilot project in Regina that began last week. Those shots will be administered 21 days after recipients received their first shot.

“Soon in the new year, we will have our first Saskatchewan residents who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, pretty remarkable when you think about it,” he said.
