Nova Scotia RCMP using helicopter in search for five missing scallop fishermen

Dec 18, 2020 | 9:59 AM

HALIFAX — The Nova Scotia RCMP say they plan to use a helicopter today to continue the search for five fishermen whose boat sank in the Bay of Fundy on Tuesday morning.

The Mounties issued a statement from Hillsburn, N.S., saying the helicopter belongs to the province’s Department of Lands and Forestry.

A ground search of the bay’s southern shoreline, which was suspended Thursday as a snowstorm descended on the region, will be kept on hold because weather conditions remain poor in the area.

Industry officials say the 15-metre scallop dragger Chief William Saulis had six fishermen aboard when it is believed to have capsized in three-metre waves near Delaps Cove, N.S.

The body of one fisherman was found Tuesday night.

The boat and the other crew members have yet to be found.
